I learned so much from my participation in Leadership Day. As a younger student, I had no prior experience with this type of advocacy. The preparation sessions before our Capitol Hill visits were really informative about the current state of medicine-related legislation and about what health advocacy looks like for different professionals. I was able to establish unique mentorship connections with physicians with very different experiences from what I find at my institution.
Our state delegation had members from all career stages, from myself being a first-year student to a retired internist. The other participants provided a lot of guidance in terms of expectations and how to best prepare for our meetings. They really helped me feel less intimidated, and I felt like I gained confidence throughout the day on Capitol Hill. Overall, this was a great experience, from which I took away great mentorship and a whole new advocacy skillset. I hope to continue developing the connections I made in future ACP events. I would recommend Leadership Day to any medical student interested in advocacy or health policy. Paula Valiño, BS MD-PhD Student | Entering Class of 2022 Washington University School of Medicine |
Advocacy day was a great way to get involved with advocacy on a national level and I felt like I was contributing to positive change! I learned many valuable skills and got a better understanding of the intersection of politics and healthcare. I feel inspired to continue seeking out political advocacy opportunities and make it a significant aspect as my career as a future physician!
